BATTLEFIELD ORDERS (aka RESEARCH/WEB QUEST surrounding WWI)

1. Research weapons used in the Great War and explain how they are changing the face of war in 1918. Weapons to explore:

A. flamethrower
Allowed the soliders to throw flames from a distances because of how large they explode.

B.tank
This gave protection as well as shooting large explosive.

Machine gun
Shoots automatically for a period of time.

Submarine:
Able to travel by water and observe their surrounding.

airplane
This allowed soliders to have a overview of their enemies.

F. 3" mortar

2. Explain what "no man's land" is and draw an illustration of it.

This wasan ugly area between the trenches ---scraggly trees, boulders, artillery craters, barbed wire during World War I.

3. How is gas used as a biological weapon in the Great War? What types of gas are used, and what is their effects? They were thrown at the enemies. Many didnt know they were being gassed until they would feel chest pains. Mustard Gas was the most deadly biological weapon that was used in thetrenches. It was odourless and took 12 hours to take effect. The nastiest thing about mustard gas is that it made the skin blister, the eyes sore and the victim would start to vomit. It would cause internal and external bleeding, and would target the lungs. Itcould take up to 5 weeks to die!

4. Who is the Red Baron? Why is he famous, and how does he die?

A solider, or aircraftsman, that helped during the time of WWI. He was famous because he had multiple victories and he died by the blow striking of the Australian and British servicemen

5. What is the Schlieffen Plan, and is it working in 1917?

was both offensive and defensive...and the men who subsequently enhanced and modified his strategy, including Helmuth von Moltke, German Chief of Staff in 1914 - took as his starting assumption a war on two fronts, against France in the west and Russia in the east. The nature of the alliance system ensured that Russia was allied with France (and latterly Britain), set against Germany's alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy. It was the only viable thing proposed.

6. Explain how the Archduke's assassination is a catalyst for the war.

After his death the start of WWI started, it caused the Austria-Hungary to stamp its authority onto the Serbians, for they believed ot was the Serbian government that implicated teh death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

7. Find Helen Burrey's 1917 journal. Summarize the information that you find.

She was fascinated by all the advances for the patients in the trains as well as hospitals. She also worked with gassed patients in a train when they were seperated from each other on the train.

8. Draw an illustration of a typical set of trenches used in France during WW I. one.

9. Explain the concept of "Pal Battalions" and evaluate whether or not they were a good strategy for the German and English armies.

The "Pal Battalions" was comprised of soldiers raised in the same locality with the promise they would serve with their friends for the duration of the war.
